St Justin - St Brelade's cross paperknife (pewter)St Justin - St Brelade's cross paperknife (pewter)

Pewter handle with embossed design and Celtic cross top. Chrome-plated steel blade.

The Celtic cross symbolises the bridge to higher energies and planes of existence. It represents the relationship between the celestial realm (vertical axis) and the earthly plane (horizontal axis). The circle around the cross symbolises both the Great Wheel of Life and the solar energy. The tall shafts, like the ancient menhirs and the inscribed stones of the dark ages, represent the union between the earth and spirit, the stones firmly fixed in the earth and reaching upwards to the heavens. In this way it can be seen that Celts easily adapted their ancient religious beliefs to the new ones introduced by Christianity.

St Justin - Evangelists' paperknife (pewter)St Justin - Evangelists' paperknife (pewter)

Pewter handle with embossed Celtic design and chrome-plated steel blade.

The four Evangelists were emphasised repeatedly through their symbols and the allocation of them at first varied, as did the order of the Gospels. After St Jerome the symbols were established as the man for Matthew, the lion for Mark, the calf for Luke and the eagle for John. On this paperknife the eagles are shown entwined with intricate Celtic knotwork which is used extensively in Celtic art.

The Celtic cross is typical of many found in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. They were carved in local stone by the native Celts and are still intact centuries later.
