St Justin - Ogham Collection (12)
St Justin - January ogham pendant (pewter)
Pewter pendant on adjustable leather thong. The ogham inscription represents January and the alder tree. It symbolises tenacity and determination - oracular (prophetic) ability, to protect and be protected.
The alphabet of the Oghams is also known under the name of Oghm, Oghaim or Ogam, created according to the legend by Ogma (Celtic god Ogmios), god of knowledge. Inscriptions in Ogham characters are only found in the British Isles. There are about 350 known inscriptions carved between 300 & 700 AD. Ogham is really an alphabetic code rather than an alphabet. There were four groups of five letters in the system but later five more signs were added to represent dipthongs. The inscriptions themselves had a central stem from which short staves went left, right or crossed. Although many were magical, most were memorial or invocatory.
Our Oghams are symbolic of trees associated with months of the year. All of the trees representing the months and letters of the Celtic calendar and alphabet also represent a fragment of the Celtic cosmology, their archetypal symbols and their immediate world view. Each tree has a corresponding god or deity as well as a symbol and heavenly body associated with it.
Pendant: Width: 18mm Height: 31mm Thong length (max.): 76cm (30 inch)
Supplied in a flock-lined acetate window box.
