St Justin - NEW Staffordshire Hoard inspired hair-slide (bronze)

Bronze hair-slide with embossed zoomorphic design and rosewood pin. Design inspired by a gold sword hilt found amongst the Staffordshire Hoard.

The rosewood pin on the back holds the hair tightly to prevent the hairslide from slipping out. Hairslides with a wooden pin require a thicker mass of hair to be effective but once pushed in remain very secure.

On the 5th July, 2009, whilst metal-detecting on farmland in southern Staffordshire, Terry Herbert began to unearth the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon treasure ever found. Comprising over 1500 items in gold, silver and other alloys and valued at £3.3 million, the collection is thought to date back to the late 7th and early 8th centuries. St Justin has recreated history by producing items inspired by this amazing find.

St Justin - NEW Clonmacnois cross - bronze

Bronze openwork cross on gold-plated brass chain.

The Celtic cross symbolises the bridge to higher energies and planes of existence. It represents the relationship between the celestial realm (vertical axis) and the earthly plane (horizontal axis). The circle around the cross symbolises both the Great Wheel of Life and the solar energy. The tall shafts, like the ancient menhirs and the inscribed stones of the dark ages, represent the union between the earth and spirit, the stones firmly fixed in the earth and reaching upwards to the heavens. In this way it can be seen that Celts easily adapted their ancient religious beliefs to the new ones introduced by Christianity.

The paisley motif is of Persian and Indian origin; it also appears in early Celtic art. Its western name derives from the town of Paisley in Scotland, where, in the early 19th century, weavers first began to copy Kashmir shawls. The shape has been said to resemble a mango, a cashew nut, a pear and even a leech. In the 1960s the paisley pattern enjoyed a resurgence of popularity when it was associated with psychedelic style and now, once again, it is appearing on the catwalk.

Solid sterling silver pendant on sterling silver trace chain.

The popular and best known tale of Saint Christopher, is as the patron saint of travellers. According to these stories, Christopher's original name was Offero and was born in Canaan. He was a tall and very strong man who wandered the world in search of adventure. Eventually he sought out a Christian hermit who instructed him to spend his life in the service of Christ by helping others. According to legend Offero became a porter and guide, helping people to cross a swift and dangerous stream near to the hermit's dwelling place. One day he carried a small child across the stream. The child grew heavier as he crossed the torrent and when they arrived on the other side, the child revealed himself as Christ, and explained he was so heavy because he bore the weight of the world. Christ then baptized Offero with water from the stream and Offero took the new name Christopher which means Christ-bearer. Christopher's service at the stream led to his patronage of all things related to travel and travellers.
