St Justin - Pewter/tin spiral neck torc - square knot ends (pewter)
Twisted tin torc with pewter ends embossed with a Celtic knot.
The Celts used knotwork to decorate many of their artifacts. To them, the intricate patterns woven into spirals and knots symbolise the continuity of life.
According to classical writers, the Celts wore torcs into battle. Both neck and arm torcs have been discovered in Britain and Europe and it is thought that they marked a person of high status, such as a warrior or chieftain.

St Justin - Pewter/tin spiral neck torc - spiral ends (pewter)
Twisted tin torc. Pewter ends embossed with spirals which have a flat front and convex back.
Spirals can be traced back 7000 years, developing from observing natural examples in shells and plants. Clockwise and anticlockwise spirals represent the inner and outer evolution of the spirit respectively. In relation to the seasonal calendar these relate to the winter and summer, the year being polarised into light and dark seasons. In Celtic belief this translates to the theme in which one always moves from the darkness into the light.
