St Justin - 40mm Unicorn buckle (pewter)
Pewter with relief unicorn detail. This buckle has a hinged bar for the belt to clip onto and the other end has a strong prong to push through the hole in the belt.
The unicorn is a mythical beast, said to be famous for its virtue, courage and strength. Its horn was believed to be a powerful antidote against poison. According to legend, the unicorn could only be captured if a maiden was placed near a location the animal frequented. It would sense her purity and lay its head in her lap. Unicorns symbolize purity, elegance and charm. Up until the 17th century unicorns were believed to be real animals, there were even some unicorns horns in existence, though now they are recognized to be the horns of narwhales.

St Justin - Celtic cross buckle (for 1.5"/40mm belt)
Pewter with embossed design and cut-outs. This buckle has a hinged bar for the belt to clip onto and the other end has a strong prong to push through the hole in the belt.
The Celtic cross symbolises the bridge to higher energies and planes of existence. It represents the relationship between the celestial realm (vertical axis) and the earthly plane (horizontal axis). The circle around the cross symbolises both the Great Wheel of Life and the solar energy. The tall shafts, like the ancient menhirs and the inscribed stones of the dark ages, represent the union between the earth and spirit, the stones firmly fixed in the earth and reaching upwards to the heavens. In this way it can be seen that Celts easily adapted their ancient religious beliefs to the new ones introduced by Christianity.

St Justin - Large Welsh dragon buckle (for 1.5"/40mm belt)
Pewter with relief Welsh dragon surrounded by embossed Celtic knotwork. This buckle has a hinged bar for the belt to clip onto and the other end has a strong prong to push through the hole in the belt.
The official emblem of Wales, the red dragon (y ddraigg goch), although perhaps of Chinese origin, was introduced to Britain by the Romans some 1800 years ago. Initially a military standard, over time this mythical beast developed into the flag of the nation. Henry VII claimed descent fron Cadwaladar, the great Welsh king, traditionally called the last king of Britain whose dragon symbol, redolent of bravery and fierceness, had been taken up by later Welsh princes.
The Celts used knotwork to decorate many of their artifacts. To them, the intricate patterns woven into spirals and knots symbolise the continuity of life.

Pewter with embossed design. This buckle has a hinged bar for the belt to clip onto and the other end has a strong prong to push through the hole in the belt.
The Lindisfarne design on this item comes from the famous Lindisfarne Gospels. An opulent and richly decorated Gospel book, the Lindisfarne Gospels was created in the early eighth century CE for ceremonial use at the monastery of Lindisfarne in the northeast of England. The manuscript's main text, which was written out by a single scribe, is a Latin version of the Four Gospels known as Saint Jerome's Vulgate. This is a revision of the Latin Bible made in the late fourth century CE and widely used throughout the western world.

St Piran is the patron saint of tin miners and also the national saint of Cornwall. St Piran rediscovered tin-smelting when his black hearthstone, which was evidently a slab of tin-bearing ore, had the tin smelt out of it and rise to the top to form a white cross. From this came the St Piran flag which is the white cross on the black background that you can see all over Cornwall today. St Piran's day is celebrated annually on 5 March.
