St Justin - 10th Anniversary ogham (oblong) on leather thong (cornish tin)St Justin - 10th Anniversary ogham (oblong) on leather thong (cornish tin)

Cornish tin pendant on adjustable black leather thong. The ogham inscription reads 10th anniversary.

The alphabet of the oghams is also known under the name of oghm, oghaim or ogam, and was created, according to legend, by Ogma (Celtic god Ogmios), god of knowledge. Inscriptions in ogham characters are only found in the British Isles. There are about 350 known inscriptions carved between 300 & 700 AD. Ogham is really an alphabetic code rather than an alphabet. There were four groups of five letters in the system but later five more signs were added to represent dipthongs. The inscriptions themselves had a central stem from which short staves went left, right or crossed. Although many were magical, most were memorial or invocatory.

St Justin - Pixie pendant - 18St Justin - Pixie pendant - 18" silver belcher chain (cornish tin)

Cornish tin pixie on sterling silver belcher chain.

Pixies were the underground spirits of the Cornish tin mines. Also known as good luck knockers or spriggans, they were generally described as small, capricious little creatures that were often spiteful. Their presence was not considered altogether unlucky since they were scarcely ever heard, except in the neighbourhood of rich veins of tin, where they tapped away vigorously.
It was common practice amongst miners to leave them a didjan (morsel) of their croust (lunch) in an effort to gain their goodwill. Failure to do this could entail dire retribution for the unfortunate but guilty miner.

St Justin - St Christopher pendant (sml)- 18St Justin - St Christopher pendant (sml)- 18" belcher chain (cornish tin)

Cornish tin pendant with St Christopher in relief. Sterling silver belcher chain.

The popular and best known tale of Saint Christopher, is as the patron saint of travellers. According to these stories, Christopher's original name was Offero and was born in Canaan. He was a tall and very strong man who wandered the world in search of adventure. Eventually he sought out a Christian hermit who instructed him to spend his life in the service of Christ by helping others. According to legend Offero became a porter and guide, helping people to cross a swift and dangerous stream near to the hermit's dwelling place.
One day he carried a small child across the stream. The child grew heavier as he crossed the torrent and when they arrived on the other side, the child revealed himself as Christ, and explained he was so heavy because he bore the weight of the world. Christ then baptized Offero with water from the stream and Offero took the new name Christopher which means Christ-bearer. Christopher's service at the stream led to his patronage of all things related to travel and travellers.

St Justin - Pasty pendant on 18St Justin - Pasty pendant on 18" silver curb chain (small) (cornish tin)

Small, polished Cornish tin pasty on sterling silver curb chain

The Cornish pasty is a simple and delicious pastry turnover filled with chopped meat, potatoes and vegetables and crimped around the edge. It had its origin in Cornwall, where it served both as meal and lunch box for workers heading off to the mines. Cornish tin mines contained arsenic, and it was an advantage to the miner that they could hold the pasty by the convenient 'handle' that it provides to the eater. They would be able to eat the inside and discard the crust when they were finished. The discarded crust was also said to keep the Cornish pixies happy! Some wives even filled one corner of the pasty with jam or fruit so that it provided both main course and dessert, then marked it with her husband's initials so that the miners would know whose pasty was whose!
